Ann Herman earned the nickname Ann-tron when she went out for the cross country team as a freshman. “I guess it was because I never stopped running,” the recent Pennsbury graduate said. “I was kind of like a machine. I was told to do something and I’d do it. I just kind of went with it.” It turned out to be an effective philosophy for the Falcon standout, who finished third in the state meet as a senior and helped lead Pennsbury to its second straight team state title. “Before she came, we were making some progress,” coach Don Little said of the cross country program. “She was one of the key components that helped the program move forward.”

A two-year captain, Herman let her actions speak for themselves. “She’s a lead-by-example type of girl,” Little said. “It’s a quality you look for in a leader. She’s a model student, polite and well mannered and very coachable.”

Herman also excelled in the classroom. She took numerous advanced placement courses and was ranked 33rd in a class of 750. She was a member of the National Honor Society and played saxophone in the concert band for three years. Herman also has been involved in community service.

This fall, Herman will be attending Cornell where she will most likely major in economics. She plans on running all three seasons at Cornell – fall, winter and spring. Little believes Herman’s best races are ahead of her when she gets a chance to compete at longer distances. In cross country, she will be moving up to 6,000 meters and sometimes 8,000 meters. In track, she will have the option of running a 10K.

Brian Donnelly excelled on the football field and baseball diamond at Council Rock South. As a senior, he had the daunting task of trying to fill the enormous shoes left with the graduation of three-year starting quarterback Billy Fleming. He excelled, leading the Golden Hawks to a National Conference title and a spot in the District One AAAA title game. “High level athletes are going to have that inner competition,” Rock South football coach Vince Bedesem said. “I knew and our coaches knew he was going to want to prove to everybody that this season was not going to be a down one just because Fleming is no longer here. So, sure, he had a little bit of a chip on his shoulder, but he put it in the right place and was able to feed off that.”

Donnelly led the conference with 1,521 yards on 204 carries (an average of 7.5 yards per carry) and 23 touchdowns. “Brian did a tremendous job of running our offense,” Bedesem said. “When he came on, especially in the beginning, he was very humble. He kept his eyes and ears open and his mouth shut, and he went to work. And when he got acclimated to football again (after a summer of playing baseball), he started to become more of a vocal leader again. We were a few steps away from making the state final, and a lot of it was due in part to Brian Donnelly.”

This spring, Donnelly led his Golden Hawk baseball squad to a National Conference title and a spot in both the District One and PIAA State championship games. Highlighting his senior season, Donnelly tossed a one-hit shutout in Rock South’s 4-0 win over Altoona in the state semifinals, this after tossing a two-hitter in the quarterfinals. “Brian had a tremendous career for CR South,” coach Greg Young said. “He has grown a lot as a player and carried us the entire season. He will be missed.”

Donnelly, who also played basketball for the Golden Hawks, will take his talents to Rider University, the recipient of a baseball scholarship. He plans on majoring in business administration.
