Pennsbury Dominates from Start to Finish

By Glenn Kaiser

Pennsbury Head Coach Wayne Stinson has found his home.  Since moving across the Delaware River from Rider, he has done nothing but build, and the Pennsbury wrestling program is back.  Not only new, but much improved.  The Falcons dominated the 20th Annual Wetzel Classic in true style, grit, hard work and determination.

Pennsbury had four finalists, but only one champion in 120-pounder Quentin Kervick.  Kervick was outstanding, downing extremely talented Dustin Marion (Harry S Truman) 6-3.  It really didn’t matter about crowning champs, it was more about establishing the new norm for Pennsbury wrestling.  The entire team contributed. They appeared focused and, most of all, resilient.  Conwell-Egan Head Coach Chuckie Connor must have been proud, as he too was a Pennsbury Falcon and state champion.

Runner-ups for Pennsbury included Zack Mongiello at 138, Mason Grodzki at 145, both of whom lost to Conwell-Egan grapplers.  Grodzki was decked by local rival Hayden Mann (Egan) in the first period. Mann was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.  Pennsbury big man Caleb Rodriquez dropped a 4-1 decision in the 285-pound final for the Falcons.

Kyle Von Schmidt garnered bronze at 106, John Luchansky was 6th at 113, Nolan Holloran, 6th at 126, along with Nick Sieger at 132.  Aiden Valez wrestled back for third at 152-pounds and Mason Keller followed with a 7th place finish at 160.  The upper weights kept it going with a 7th place finish from Walker Murray at 172, and Cade Gabbet was the bronze medalist at 189 with a win over Truman’s John Mellor, recording a fall in 41 seconds.  Tyson Murray made it 13-for-13 medals with his 5th place finish at 215-pounds.  Amazing…keep an eye out on this Pennsbury team as they head into the new year.

No longer in the shadows of the Council Rock and Neshaminy teams of old, Pennsbury is back.  It’s no easy task in the SOL Patriot, but Pennsbury will be in the mix, and the old Power-10 of wrestling looks like yesterday.

Pennsbury amassed 227.5 points for the team title.  SOL neighbor Neshaminy was the team runner-up with 162.5 points and three champions.  Another local, former state champ (while at Truman, Neshaminy Head Coach Frank Bing, led his squad to another outstanding tourney performance.  Thus, don’t overlook any Neshaminy grappler this season.  Calvin Lederer is having a blast in his senior campaign. Lederer improved to 9-1 on the season with his 4-2 victory over Oxford’s Austin McMillan in the 132-pound final.  The Redskins’ Dan Hansbury captured a title over another Ches-Mont foe at 152 with a fall over Topher Tyron (Unionville) in 3:39 in the second-period.  Andrew Pokalsky was most impressive, and just as deserving as OW Mann, with his dismantling of Alan Alexander from Pope John Paul II, who was the 6th place finisher at 152-pounds in the 2021 PIAA (AA) Individual Championships.  Pokalsky muscled his way to a 7-6 decision for his title.

The SOL was well represented in the finals with two Central Bucks West champs.  Light-weight Patrick Kelly was impressive as he ran thru the 106-pound weight class with a fall in his final tilt over Harriton’s Nadav Nafshi.  Big man for the Bucks, Carl DiGiorgio, stayed perfect (9-0) on the season with his final win over Egan’s Dante Burns, 8-2.  CB West’s Teague McCormack garnered bronze at 113 with a fall in 37 seconds over Oxford’s Jordan Schiable, earning him the tournament’s Most Falls in the Least Amount of Time award.  CB West’s Jake Wierzbowski decked Truman’s Colin Greenblat for third at 160 to add to the Bucks impressive showing.

Other SOL top-four placers included four Upper Dublin grapplers, who have improved the Flying Cardinals team with Colin Higgins (4th at 126), Dan Gorman (4th at 132). Gorman lost to Hatboro-Horsham’s Christ Staub 8-7 in the bronze battle.  Tommy Clayton made it three medalists in a row for UD, finishing 4th at 145, and 215-pounder Riley Hackett looked studly with his 4th place finish.  Lower Moreland’s Dereck Mronenko finished 4th at 152 at the hands of Pennsbury’s Aiden Valdez 7-1.  Terelle Dorceus (Truman) rebounded from his semifinal loss with a third-place finish at 172 with his win over Tennent’s Nolan Cataldi, 5-4.

Host Hatboro-Horsham, without standouts Joe Martini, III, and Hunter Long, grabbed additional medals with two fifth place finishers in 106-pounder Ryan Allgeier who decked Neshaminy’s Donald Little and Orion Newell who beat Pennsbury’s Nolan Halloran 4-0.

All-in-all the 20th Annual Wetzel was a great wrestling event showcasing talent from around District One, District Twelve and beyond.  Thanks to all the volunteers and the H-H wrestling community for pulling it off again, especially after a year of no wrestling at H-H.

Oxford (Ches-Mont) finished 3rd overall in the team standings with 155.5-points, followed by District 12’s much improved Conwell Egan in 4th with 143.5 pts.  SOL teams finishing in the top-10 included CBW 7th (102.5), Truman 8th (92.5), Upper Dublin 9th (91.5) and H-H with 81pts.
