Tyler Whitehead – Shippensburg University (Soccer)

Major:  Sports Medicine or Athletic Training

Reasons for choosing Shippensburg:  “I liked the coach and the players when I went for my visit, and the size of the school is perfect for what I’m looking for. It’s not too far, but it’s not too close, so distance-wise it was good.”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer?  “When we started playing in tournaments, coaches start talking to you about how interested they are in you, and it makes you feel as though you’re wanted. I always thought I wanted to play soccer in college, but I didn’t know what level I was going to go to. Division II is perfect for me.”

Coach Rick Schmidt says:  “I have one captain on my varsity team – always have, always will. One person steers the ship. I don’t believe in natural leaders, but from the start, Tyler had the qualities, he had the ability to fill that position on a team that we knew would be very competitive. There were a lot of seniors on the team, a lot of older players who were very experienced, and I needed somebody who could work with them, I needed somebody who would get them to work for us, and he was a perfect fit for that. He did an outstanding job, so I’m really proud of him in that capacity.
“As a player, he’s an incredible defender. He always has been. If there’s one position on the field that has to play with composure, it’s defense, and he just had that. His enthusiasm and commitment to the sport of soccer and his fellow players is unwavering, and he has served as an outstanding role model for other players. I think he will do a very good job at Shippensburg. He has good size, he’s got very good poise, and he’s got a lot of skill on top of the ball.”
