Wissahickon Boys Water Polo Update

Submitted by Jim Beyer

Here is an update for the past few exciting days of Wissahickon Boys Varsity Water Polo:

For anyone who has not been paying attention . . . this year is shaping up to be the year of close games!

On September  21st, the boys lost to Souderton by one point in a back and forth game full of excitement.  Wissahickon jumped out to an early lead on goals by Eun Bae, Luke Waechter and Brad Jones.  Souderton came roaring back scoring three unanswered goals of their own.  Throughout the game Wissahckon played solid defense behind superb goal tending by Mac Hennessey.  Wissahickon also showed a balanced offensive attack with additional goals by Billy McFarland, Greg Beyer (with one on a steal and breakaway score) and Luke Tarzia.  Keep us the good work boys, you WILL beat them next time.

This weekend, the boys played in the Beast of the East Tournament with games at Muhlenburg and Governor Mifflin High Schools.

In the first of two games on Friday evening, the boys easily handled the host team from Muhlenburg, winning 14-7.  Once again the boys displayed a balanced team effort on offense with the following boys all finding the net: Brad Jones (2), Alex Bolen (2), Freshman Jake Berring (3), Luke Waechter (2), Eun Bae (2) Billy McFarland (1), and Greg Beyer (2).  Greg Beyer also lead the team in assists with 5.

The second game on Friday was a different story when the boys faced a bigger and faster team from Loyola.  Despite solid defensive efforts, the boys lost to Loyola 14-2.

On Saturday afternoon, the boys faced a tough, physical, and aggressive Malvern Prep Team.  It was a classic defensive battle with Wiss suffering some bruises along the way.  Both goalies played tough with the Malvern goalie stopping 13 shots by Wiss.  When it was all said and done,  Malvern came out on top 4-3.  But, the best was yet to come.. . .the loss to Malvern set up the final game Saturday night against our conference rival North Penn. . . and what a game it was. . .

Ultimately the Trojans defeated North Penn in sudden death overtime. For those of us in the stands it was a game to remember!!  At the end of the first period, Wiss trailed by one (2-1) with a goal for us scored by Greg Beyer.  Wissahickon outscored North Penn in the second period leading at the half 4-3.  Wiss goals in that period were scored by Brad Jones, Luke Waechter and Greg Beyer. At the end of the third period, Wiss was leading North Penn by a score of 7-5.  Third period goals for Wiss included one by Luke Waechter and two by Brad Jones.  North Penn rallied in the fourth quarter scoring 5 goals to Wiss' three and regulation time ended in a 10 to 10 tie.  The teams played 2 two minute overtime periods to determine the winner.  At the end of both periods, the game was tied 12-12 with Wiss goals scored by Brad Jones and Billy McFarland.  This lead to a sudden death period ended by Brad Jones' final goal of the night on a pass from Greg Beyer.   Perhaps the play of the game was Mac Henessey's "triple block", stopping a rocket shot and two North Penn rebounds.

And it gets better . . . . .we play North Penn at their pool TOMORROW.  Lets go for a repeat!!!
