Wrestling: SOL by the Numbers at SE Regionals

Glenn Kaiser recaps the SE Regionals by the numbers.

SOL BY THE NUMBERS AT SOUTHEAST REGIONALS

Twenty-four Suburban One League wrestlers advance to Hershey, PA for the 2017 PIAA (AAA) Individual Wrestling Championships, more than any other league in District One.  The SOL crowned five champions at the SE Region, again tops in D1.  Council Rock South and Pennridge crowned two champions each, and Hatboro-Horsham garnered the gold at Heavyweight.  No surprise that Council Rock South easily won the team title with champs Zack Trampe (132) and Riley Palmer (145).  Pennridge had two repeat SE Region champs in Matt Parker (120) and Josh Stillings (160).  The big surprise for many was Nick Chapman (Hatboro-Horsham) winning the 285-pound championship over Josh Walls (Avon Grove), who defeated Chapman by fall in the D1 Central finals.

Chapman was clearly the best wrestler in the heavyweight division at the SE Regionals after making the jump up from 220-pounds for the postseason.  Chapman made a mistake against Walls on his feet in the second period of the D1 Central finals by attempting a toss at the wrong time and got caught on his back, but in the regional final, he outwrestled Walls earning a takedown with a cradle in the third and another takedown at the buzzer, winning 5-2 and upping his postseason record this year to 9-1 while avenging that only loss.  Chapman heads to states as the fifth seed at 285-pounds.

Chapman talked about his regional tournament prior to his Hershey adventure:  “Going into regionals, I had to just take it one match at a time, work my stuff, don’t do anything too outrageous, and just do the stuff that I learned and keep doing it.”  In regards to his approach to the three-day state tournament, he said “just like any other tournament, take it one match at a time…and keep the momentum going.”  Chapman became the second wrestler since the three D1 tournament alignment to defeat three district champions in one tournament, he joins Scotty Parker (Pennridge), Matt Parker’s brother now at Lehigh, to accomplish this feat.  There are seven total D1 wrestlers that have done that in both the two-district format and three-district format at the SE Regionals.

CR South’s Joe Doyle was the runner-up at 220-pounds as he was defeated for the second time this season by Brian Kennerly from Upper Darby 3-2.  Kennerly and Doyle are ranked #1 and #2 in the state at this weight according to PA Power Rankings.  The match was surrounded by a bit of controversy in what looked like a late takedown or reversal to win at the buzzer, but the officials waved off the points.  Don’t be surprised if Doyle and Kennerly meet one more time in the finals at the Giant Center, and this time Doyle will come out on top.

Below are some stats from this past weekend, good luck to all the SOL coaches and wrestlers this weekend starting this afternoon at 4 pm.
