What to Watch For

The reigning District 1 Class 5A champion, Springfield (D), is off to a hot start with convincing wins over Central League foes. The Cougars face off against mostly Central League opponents until an intriguing match-up against Cardinal O’Hara on February 4.

After early season wins over Abington, Abington Friends, and Shipley, Germantown Academy looks to start off strong in Inter-Ac League play. The Patriots have four consecutive league contests from January 3 to the 12, including games against Penn Charter and Episcopal Academy.

Archbishop Ryan will have a tough stretch of games in the Catholic League towards the end of the regular season, as the Ragdolls have a January 23 contest against O’Hara, January 26 game against Neumann-Goretti, January 30 vs Archbishop Carroll and face off against Archbishop Wood, February 2.

After St. Basil ran through the Catholic Academies last year in dominating fashion, the league seems to be up in the air this season, with quite a few programs earning important victories over league opponents. The Hurricanes of Villa Maria defeated the Panthers, 41-35, while Mount St. Joseph earned a 40-39 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy and 43-39 win over Basil. Look for these four teams to battle it out all year.
