Kassondra Brown – University of Rhode Island (Basketball)

Major:  Undecided

Final list of colleges:  URI, UMass, Providence, Sacred Heart, Jacksonville State

Reasons for choosing Rhode Island:  “It’s not too far – it’s four-and-a-half hours. Somewhere like Jacksonville State is nine hours away, and I didn’t think I could do it personally. I liked the campus, and they have good academics. I felt comfortable. I just got that feeling when I walked in.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in basketball at the collegiate level?  “It’s a dream come true to go D-I, and it’s finally happened. I think my sophomore year is when I really broke out. Ever since then, my confidence is through the roof. The sky’s the limit.”

Coach Dan Marsh says:  “When I first saw her, she reminded me so much of (former West Chester Henderson/Hofstra star) Shante Evans, who destroyed us back in the day. There’s nobody who is as strong as Kassondra in the paint, nobody. If she gets the ball inside, it’s up to her whether she’s going to score or not. What makes Kassondra special is she can do so many other things. She’s such a great defender – she’s not a shot blocker, but she steals the ball, she anticipates well, she has good defensive awareness and the fact that she can take a kid off the dribble. We don’t plan on using her in the paint a whole lot this year. I want to see those big kids try and guard her on the perimeter because she’s going to go right by them.
“Kassondra’s freshman year ended up being a defining moment for her because she came in highly touted, and we had a really good team that year with Leah Simmons and Lizzie Oleary. Kassondra was probably good enough to come in and by not playing her a whole lot her freshman year and told her she needed to come back and be ready. Boy, was she ready. She came back a whole different player, and she’s gotten better every year.
“Kassondra is one of those kids I’m really proud of because she’s worked really hard both on and off the court. She had some work to do academically too. Now she’s an A and B student. She made a complete transformation both on and off the court. It’s a coach’s dream. She’s become a leader, she’s super motivated for this year. She’s just a great kid, and I’m really, really happy for her.”
