Frances Erney – St. Bonaventure University (Swimming)

Final list of colleges:  St. Bonaventure, Seton Hall

Reasons for choosing St. Bonaventure:  “St Bonaventure was the first recruiting trip I went on. As soon as I got there, I knew it was the place for me. It was just a really good environment. The whole team was really inviting, and everyone was incredibly nice. They got a new coach this year, and I think they’ll do really well this year. I knew it was the place for me.”

What was the progression that led you to swimming at the collegiate level?  “I always knew. It’s something I always wanted to do all my life, and to go on to the collegiate level is awesome. I love high school sports. I love swimming, and to be able to do it again for four more years is great, and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Coach Joe Lennon says:  “Frances is really one of the most talented kids that has been through the program in my 15 years here. She’s a very hard worker, and she’s very self motivated, which plays a big role in the success of any athlete.
“Frances has set very high goals. She wants to do really well. She understands what it takes to do well in swimming. There’s a huge training element – a lot of hours, a lot of time, and she certainly is aware of that and pushes herself. When you combine talent with effort, it can really produce nice results, and that’s what we see.
“She’s very versatile. She’s a distance swimmer, and she embraces the challenges with the time commitment. Distance events make you feel really tired much longer than the sprints where you get done your race before you really feel bad. A distance swimmer has to get used to swimming feeling bad but being able to push themselves through that wall. She’s able to do that almost better than any kid I’ve seen come through our program. It pays off for her.”
