Michael Harris – American University (Basketball)

Major:  Business

Final list of colleges:  American, Iona, Loyola (Md.), Old Dominion

Reasons for choosing American: “I went on a visit, and I got to talk to (coach Megan Gebbia), and I realized I really like her as a person as well as a coach. I liked her coaching style – the way she was a teacher. She’s exactly the kind of person I wanted to be taught by. I’ve always wanted to be taught by a female coach just because I’ve never had that experience. Also, afterwards, I met the teammates I would be playing with, and I loved them. That’s really important because those are the people you’ll be hanging out with.
“American also was one of my top schools because of their high academic standards. When I went to visit, I noticed they have their own tutor, and they spend time with their students to make sure their grades are kept up. I really wanted that academic support because of the major I’m going into.”

Coach Dan Marsh says:  “The biggest thing is Michael’s perseverance. She battled through the injury, and she always said she would be first team all-conference and she would be a Division One athlete. At times it wasn’t looking like that was going to happen, but she never gave up and kept working hard. She pushed herself through it, and American found her at the PW Tournament last fall.
“Michael’s the best rebounder I’ve ever coached, and she’s a tremendous shot blocker. She’s very physical when she wants to be, and that was what the American coach loved about her. They loved that she sets good screens and can bang inside and not be intimidated, and that’s what they were looking for.
“Michael is a great kid. She’s very mature, very level headed. She was a good leader for our kids. She was the calm kid that kept everybody in check but also pushed them when she needed to. She’s a tremendous student. Michael is a goal setter. She wanted to be a Division One athlete, she wanted to go to a good academic school, and she accomplished all of those goals. She should be very proud, and we’re very proud.”
