Doug Barndt – East Stroudsburg University (Football)

Major:  Sports Management

Final list of colleges:  East Stroudsburg, Wesley (Del.)

Reasons for choosing East Stroudsburg:  “I chose East Stroudsburg because when I went and visited it was a really welcoming atmosphere, and the coaches were very kind and personable. They made me feel really at home even though it was the first time I had ever been there. It just seemed like a great place where I would fit in.”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate football?  “Actually, for almost my entire life until this year, I was thinking about playing baseball in college. That was my main goal for as long as I can remember. I figured it was my senior year and I missed football a little bit, so I wanted to play. It just turned out that I had a pretty good season. The first time recruiters came to talk to us, it was a shock at first. I don’t know what made me change my mind, but I just figured if I’m going to be playing any sport for the next four years, I feel like I’ll have more fun with football than any other sport.”

Coach George Banas says:  “It’s been a pleasure and honor this year to work with Doug. I wish we would have had him previous years, but we take what we can get. He was a pleasant surprise this year. No one would have thought that he would be our starting safety and wide receiver when the year started or even last offseason. It’s been an absolute pleasure to be his coach and part of their family.
“What stood out about Doug were his instincts and his desire to hit. Here’s a safety who’s 6-2 or 6-3 and pushing 200 pounds that can run like a deer, and instinctually, he comes up and makes plays and puts himself in a good position and just loves to hit. I don’t remember a game where – at the end of the night – he didn’t have a bloody nose from his helmet coming down over the brim of his nose. It was sort of the ongoing joke – if he didn’t hit hard enough, it wasn’t bleeding.
“Doug is just an athlete. He’s played baseball all over the country, and even last summer, he was away two to three weeks playing in Florida and everywhere else. He hasn’t even touched his limit. I really think with Doug a school like East Stroudsburg is going to take him to the next level and beyond as far as his ability and learning the game.”
