Brandon Birkhead – Bloomsburg University (Baseball)

Major:  Undecided

Final list of colleges: Bloomsburg, Shippensburg, University of New Orleans, Rider

Reasons for choosing Bloomsburg:  “It’s a good academic experience, and the baseball program was number two in PSAC in their conference. They also had the major I wanted, which is management or business. Bloomsburg isn’t too far from home. I think it’s just perfect for me.”

What was the progression that led you to playing baseball at the collegiate level?  “When I was five or six years old, I wanted to play major league baseball. I always wanted to get drafted out of high school, but I came to realization when I was a freshman that it was not going to happen. I had to go the route through college, so I thought I definitely wanted to play college baseball someday.”

Coach Kyle Dennis says:  “Brandon is a multi-tool player that loves the game of baseball. He works out for hours on end on his own to become a better player. Brandon’s pitching this year took a huge step forward. He was composed and really learned to pitch rather than just throw and rely on his velocity. This season he led the team in innings pitched (46), wins (five) and strikeouts (51).
“Brandon made a great selection of schools. I think that at Bloomsburg he will be able to contribute right away both on the mound and at the plate. He possesses tremendous power and squares balls up regularly. He was amongst the team leaders in hard hit balls all season but had some tough luck with fields with no fences and line drives snared by infielders. Defensively, when he is not pitching, I could see him playing a corner infield position or possibly a corner outfield spot.
“Brandon is a competitor, team leader and great teammate. He is continuously positive, likes to find the humor in various situations, but he knows when it is time to buckle down and get to work, and he loves to work. I am going to greatly miss him, not only for his outstanding baseball skills but also because of the quality of a person he is.”
