Valerie Buehler – La Salle University (Softball)

Major:  Speech Pathology

Final list of colleges:  La Salle, East Stroudsburg, Fairleigh Dickinson

Reasons for choosing La Salle:  “Academics were a big part of my decision, just because it seemed like a perfect fit for me, but the biggest part of it was how comfortable I felt with Ron Shoemaker as the coach and how comfortable I was when I got to the campus. It seemed like a good fit and the best choice for me.”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate softball?  “I started playing softball when I was really young, and literally when I walked up to the field, I said, ‘I’m going to be a pitcher.’ My dad was thinking, ‘You don’t know the first thing about pitching,’ but I said, ‘That’s okay. That’s what I’m going to be.’
“As I progressed, we were approached by someone who said I had to go to a pitching coach if I wanted to get anywhere with it. Once I started travel, that’s when we knew this was how I was going to go to college.”

Coach Frank McSherry says:  “Val has been a workhorse for the last couple of years. Even fighting through injuries as a sophomore late in the season, she took us to the state final game. She’s a bulldog on the mound. She doesn’t like to get beat, and I’m not just talking about the game. She doesn’t like to get beat on a pitch. She’s pitched in some really, really tough games, and it seems the bigger the game, the more she gets up and pitches better. Our biggest games throughout the regular season are our Neshaminy games and the Robbinsville game. Robinsville was a heck of a team from New Jersey, and she threw 10 innings against them and gave up one run.
“Last year she had a great, great season, but we just ran into a buzzsaw in (eventual state champion) CB South. Give all the credit to them, but Val is a workhorse out there. She throws every inning for us, and she’s just a real good teammate and we stress that.”

La Salle softball coach Ron Shoemaker says:  “Val brings a history of success pitching big games both at the high school level as well as on the national travel ball scene. We expect that success to continue here at La Salle.”
