Jarrett Button – Stony Brook University (Track & Field)

Major:  Engineering

Final list of colleges: Stony Brook, The College of New Jersey, Robert Morris

Reasons for choosing Stony Brook:  “Their engineering program was a four-year program, and I liked the classes and facilities they have for the engineering program. The coach is really nice, and their athletic facilities are really good too. They have state-of-the-art equipment, and it’s D-1. I was between D-2 and D-1, but I like D-1.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track at the collegiate level?  “I’ve been doing track since sixth or seventh grade. I’ve been doing it for a really long time, and I like it. It was something I always wanted to do.”

Coach Gerry Stemplewicz says: “Both Alec and Jarrett Button have been team captains for winter track and spring track. Both come to practice every single day. While they’re leading guys in their specific areas, both are very team oriented – whatever the team needs. If it means running a relay instead of an individual event, it doesn’t matter. They’re very mature, and over the years, both guys – in their individual events – have made many outstanding contributions to the team.
“Jarrett is more of a quiet guy. He’s a four-year letter winner in both winter track and spring track. It’s not easy to be a four-year letter winner. It means you have to be a varsity letter winner as a freshman, and that’s pretty rare. Even more rare would be his range of abilities. Over the course of his career in dual meets, he has several times taken four first places, and you can only participate in four events. The interesting thing is that those four first places have come from the 100 or 200 or 400 or 4x100 or 4x400 or high jump or long jump or triple jump or 300 hurdles. If we were allowed to have him compete in more than four events, they might come from other events as well. Over the course of his career, he has done pole vault in practice, he’s done shot put and javelin in practice. When he injured his hamstring and wanted to compete in the Suburban One meet, he practiced the discus for a couple of days and competed in the meet.
“Going on to college, Jarrett would be one of those rare guys who could potentially be a successful decathlete. If we had him just do throws or just do pole vault, he would be one of the top guys on the team in any of those events we put him in, but you can only do so many things and do them well. He’s a rare kind of an athlete to come along because of that great range he has. Whatever we asked him to do, that’s what he did, and we appreciate that.”
