Ashley Cassidy – University of Cincinnati (Golf)

Major: Business

Final list of colleges:  Cincinnati, Wake Forest, James Madison

Reasons for choosing Cincinnati:  “The first time I went there I fell in love with it, and then I met the coach, and within five minutes of talking to her, you knew she’s the best coach out there. She knows so many people, she’ll set your future up, and she’s a coach that will be there. The thing you have to worry about – a lot of coaches quit when you’re there, but she said she’s going to be there for at least eight more years. Everyone just loves her. All the players love her, the people in the community love her, and she’s just the best coach out there.”

What was the progression that led you to playing golf at the collegiate level?  “I’ve always wanted to play college golf. I was searching for schools when I was going into my sophomore year, so I started early. They told me there would be some scholarship opportunities in the future, so I knew I was going to play. I really wanted to play Division One, so I worked really hard to get there.”

Highlight of high school experience:  “Winning the state championship (as a sophomore) was really fun, but being undefeated as the boys’ team, that’s unbelievable.”

Coach Mark Rubino says:  “Ashley is one of the most accomplished players maybe in the school’s history if you really add it all up. She had one of the more diverse careers based on what she did in terms of transitioning from a girls’ team to a guys’ team in the middle of her career, so starting out as part of a girls’ team and not only just pioneering the girls’ team and making it something to be proud of but winning the kind of championships that she did – Ashley is a district champion, she is a regional champion and she is a state champion. You can’t accomplish much more in terms of girls’ golf.
“Based on the circumstances, she transformed herself into a member of the guys’ team and handled that with grace and dignity and pride and was an incredibly valuable player on the guys’ team and won two consecutive league championships. When she was on the guys’ team, we never lost a league match and won two league championships. When she was a sophomore, she went to states as an individual, not just a member of a team, so she accomplished a great deal on the individual level. Being signed by a major Division One school kind of caps an incredible career, and I couldn’t be happier for her.”
