CB East Trio Wrestling at Collegiate Level

On Tuesday, June 7, 2022, Central Bucks East seniors Mason Stein, Nils Updike & Quinn Collins were recognized for committing to compete in wrestling at the collegiate level.

Quinn Collins – Rider University (Wrestling)
Major:
Cyber Security
Final list of colleges:  Rider, Appalachia State
Reasons for choosing Rider: “For one, they had my major and a very good program at that. The location was huge because it’s very close, and my family gets to come down and see me participate in sports, and that was huge for them. I also felt at home when I went there.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in wrestling at the collegiate level? “I didn’t know whether it was wrestling or lacrosse because I’m a two-sport athlete, but I knew I wanted to stick with one or the other. I continued to have success in this sport, and over the past year, I figured this I was going to do, and I was more than happy with that.”
Wrestling coach Dave Scarpill says: “With Quinn, it’s just natural talent on top of hard work on top of wrestling since he was an infant. He just has natural, slick ability, just uncanny movements – you just can’t coach it. It’s just natural. He’s a natural gamer.”

Lacrosse coach Bruce Garcia says: “Quinn came to us from Archbishop Wood in his sophomore year, and he started for us playing defense at that time. Every subsequent year, he excelled in wrestling, he excelled in lacrosse. Plus, he’s a good kid. He’s going to leave very big shoes to be filled. He’s quick, he’s athletic. We’re going to miss him a lot, but I wish him the best in his next venture at Rider.”

Favorite food:

Favorite TV show: Stranger Things
Favorite artist: J.Cole

Mason Stein – University of Maryland (Wrestling)
Major:
Computer Science
Final list of colleges: Maryland, Lehigh
Reasons for choosing Maryland: “Maryland really sold a Big 10 mindset, competing at the highest level, and that really attracted me to how competitive the league is and how hard the practices are going to be.”
What was the progression that led you to wrestling at the collegiate level?  “I was actually predominantly a soccer player up until my junior year of high school when I decided to focus on wrestling. Junior year I really turned the corner when I decided to be a one-sport athlete.”
Coach Dave Scarpill says: “Mason has been wrestling since he could walk. He’s just been ultra competitive his whole life. He works hard, and he was really good at maintaining his weight because he could have wrestled much heavier. He wrestled 160 as a junior and came down to 152 as a senior, which is very unusual. He’s just hardworking, and his mental preparedness – he always beat the kids he was supposed to beat growing up, but seldom can you beat that kid that’s better than you. Junior year, it was just one after the next after the next, and it was like, ‘This kid has turned the corner.’”

Nils Updale – Ursinus College (Lacrosse & Wrestling)
Major:
Bio & Biotech
Final list of colleges: Ursinus, York, Elizabethtown, Wilkes
Reasons for choosing Ursinus: “The small environment, the atmosphere, the really nice campus and the individualization – there’s less kids and teachers can give individual attention.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse and wrestling at the collegiate level?  “I’ve always been a three-sport athlete until freshman year, so I’ve always been able to keep up with the intensity of both sports. I’ve been wrestling since I was five, so I don’t want to give wrestling up, and I don’t want to give lacrosse up either. I’ve been pretty successful in both, and it just worked out that Ursinus was the right fit.”

Wrestling coach Dave Scarpill says: “Nils’ story is amazing He was a jayvee wrestler as a freshman, beat a senior out his sophomore year but ended up losing his spot for the postseason so he didn’t wrestle postseason sophomore year. He was hurt the first two weeks of practice and didn’t wrestle postseason junior year. Then he reels off 37 wins as a senior and is a point away from making it to states in an overtime match. He worked so hard in the offseason.”
Lacrosse coach Bruce Garcia says: “Nils was a first team all-league faceoff specialist in the Suburban One League. He won the MVP for this year for our team. He had over 250 faceoff wins this year – he actually had 252 when we finished up, which is the most we’ve ever had with any one faceoff guy in our existence. Nils is going to go on and play at Ursinus – he’s going to both wrestle and play lacrosse. They’re going to love this guy at Ursinus with his faceoff ability and his work ethic.”
