Matt Ernst – Arcadia University (Baseball)

Major:  Physical Therapy

Final list of colleges:  Arcadia, Temple, St. Joseph’s, Susquehanna

Reasons for choosing Arcadia:  “First off the academics obviously – I’m trying to get into the PT program, and they’re known for physical therapy, so that was a big plus. Also, (Bryan) Torresani is a great coach, and he showed a lot of interest in me coming down. It just seemed like the right fit for me.”

What was the progression that led you to playing baseball at the collegiate level?  “It all started last year summer ball when coaches came up to me after the games and were talking to me, and I was like, ‘Oh, this might be a possibility for me.’ My dad encouraged me to take that leap and go to the next level. It just seemed like the right fit for me.”

Coach Kyle Dennis says:  “Matt was our starting shortstop last year in his first year on varsity. When you’re a shortstop, you’ve got to be the leader. You’ve got to be one of the generals on the field along with the catcher. He took on that role last year. This year he stepped up his leadership, and his defensive ability has been very impressive just through our first two games. He’s hitting at the top of the order for us right now, he runs the bases well, and he’s fast. We’re expecting a lot of him at the top of the order, and we’re expecting him to do really well at shortstop.
“Matt played basketball in the offseason, and he’s really worked hard to get himself ready for baseball. He was always showing up to workouts whenever it fit in with his basketball schedule, so he could be ready for the start of the season because he wants to be a leader. I love my guys playing multiple sports, and I was impressed – he would have a game at night and show up at our workout in the afternoon before his game. He really put the time in. It was pretty cool to see.”
