Alex DeLeon – Youngstown State University (Softball)

Major:  Math and Science Education with a minor in Special Education

Final list of colleges:  Youngstown State, University of Pennsylvania, Virginia, East Carolina, Mount St. Mary’s

Reasons for choosing Youngstown State:  “I really loved the campus – it’s not too big and it’s not too small, it’s the perfect amount of students. I loved the coaching staff there, and I worked with the girls a few times. The school is really good with my major, and that was important to me because I am going for softball, but I’m also going for an education. The softball team usually comes in first or second in their conference, and I want to be on a team that does win and is competitive, so it was the perfect school for me.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level?  “I always knew I wanted to play in college. It’s on TV – they have the women’s college World Series, and I was always picturing myself being in that. My dad played in a men’s fast pitch league, so I grew up watching him play, which is something I loved.”

Coach Kevin Rosini says:  “Moving Alex over to shortstop last year her junior year really set the tone from day one. She accepted the move, she wanted it, and she’s been a leader since that day. For her to be named first team all-league last year in her first year at shortstop is just amazing. She’s just grown so much. Everybody respects her, and everybody enjoys playing with her. She’s the best teammate you could ask for, and she’s a leader. She deserves everything she’s gotten.
“She’s a table setter at the top of the lineup, which is great. She was our number two hitter last year, so she sacrificed a lot. Her batting average could have been way higher last year. When she did get on - the speed that she has, and her defense was amazing. To me, she’s the best defensive shortstop in our league. Anything you asked her to do to help the team win, that’s what she does.”
