Dakota Hurwitz – Gwynedd Mercy University (Field Hockey)

Major:  Early Childhood & Special Education

Final list of colleges:  Gwynedd Mercy, Shippensburg, Bloomsburg, Cabrini

Reasons for choosing Gwynedd Mercy:  “I really like the campus itself and also their education program. I’ve known the coach and the players for a while, and that was another factor.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in field hockey at the collegiate level?  “It never really dawned on me until last year when I went to the National Festival, the tournament that’s held over Thanksgiving. I didn’t go there to look at colleges. I just went there for more tournaments. Coaches were talking to me and I realized – maybe I do have the ability to play in college.”

Coach Pat Toner says:  “Dakota switched from being an attacker to being a defender this year, and we were thrilled that she was able to make that transition. It’s not easy to all of a sudden transition to defense. Give a lot credit to our defense for a great season and her, specifically, and also to our assistant coach Meg Hutchinson who really helped her become the defender she is. We’re really thrilled about that. Dakota is quick, she’s got good footwork and she sees the opportunities to step up.”
