James Chappell – Lehigh University (Track/Cross Country)

Major:  Engineering

Final list of colleges:  Lehigh, Pitt, Virginia Tech, Drexel

Reasons for choosing Lehigh:  “I wasn’t planning on running at any of the other schools, and then I went on my official visit to Lehigh, and it came up. I really liked the campus, and I liked how prestigious the academics were. I liked the team – I felt as though I fit in there, and I just liked the atmosphere in general.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track and cross country at Lehigh? “Over the summer, I was kind of torn, so I just wanted to keep my options open. I e-mailed a bunch of coaches, and a few got back to me. The Lehigh coach actually sent me a link to an unofficial visit, so I went there, and I had fun that day, so I figured I would stick around for the official visit. I feel like all the other schools I applied to were backups, and I just had my sights set on Lehigh.”

Coach Jason Gable says:  “He’s run cross country all four years, and in track he was mainly our 800 and miler. The kid is dedicated. He’s been with us for four years. With ninth graders still in the middle school, it’s hard to get ninth graders up and be dedicated when you don’t see them every day in school. His older brother Steve ran for us, and his older sister Emily ran for the school, so he knows what the program is about. He pretty much grew up with the program by watching his older two siblings run for us. He’s been a leader all these years. He’s very, very confident, and he’s very dedicated to the sport. For someone like him, who really loves the act of running and the act of competing, continuing on to Lehigh, a Division One program, is a big testament to his dedication to the sport and just how he has grown both in track and cross country over all these years.”
