Christian Brissett – University of Iowa (Track)

Major:  Exercise Science

Final list of colleges:  Iowa, Clemson, Illinois, Syracuse, University of South Florida, Ohio State, Penn State.

Reasons for choosing Iowa:  “It was the best academic program and athletic program – it was the best fusion of both. They had a good team, and they had a good offer for me. The head coach is a sprint coach, and he had the same major as me, so he knew a lot about the path.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track at the collegiate level?  “I started thinking about it my freshman year. I run the short sprints, and when I was a freshman, I was top 10 in the state. I didn’t think I was going to get that far because indoor I wasn’t that good, but then outdoor I kept working. Sophomore year I was up there at states, and my junior year I won the 200 outdoor and the 60-meter dash indoor. I was getting better and better, so I just knew it would happen.”

Dr. Robert Beale says:  “It has been a pleasure to be his coach for four years. Christian has embraced our philosophy. He’s been a model student-athlete. He’s worked diligently with the skills God has given him. I’ve watched him progress over the last two years. He really had a breakout sophomore year which was really outstanding - he was ranked one of the top sprinters as a sophomore late May.
“Christian Brissett, beyond the shadow of a doubt, has been one of the best sprinters I have ever coached athletic-wise and as an individual. He has been very receptive to our instructions and our training. I always say to the guys, ‘If you come to practice every day, I can’t promise that you’ll become a state champion, but I can guarantee that you will get better.’ It’s the law of science. If you do something long enough, the body makes adaptations and gets stronger and faster.
“Christian has grown exponentially as a young man. He has become a leader by his actions, and the program has been much better because he’s been part of the program. I think Cheltenham High School is a better school because he has come through. I wish him much success, and I’m sure he’ll be very successful at the University of Iowa. I just want to give a great thanks to his parents for supporting us. There were times we left for meets at five in the morning, and they made sure that he got here. People don’t realize how important the role of the parents is in the success of these athletes. I want to thank Cheryl and Delroy Brissett.”
