Cole German – Charleston Southern University (Baseball)

Major:  Undecided

Final list of colleges:  Charleston Southern, Seton Hall, Fairfield, Albany

Reasons for choosing Charleston Southern:  “Just an all-around gut feel – great weather, great coaching staff, great direction of the program. Everything just fit for me.”

What was the progression that led you to playing baseball at the collegiate level?  “After my freshman year, I had a pretty good year, and it got me thinking that I would love to play at the next level. My brother was older, and he was starting to think about it as well, so it kind of made me want to think about it too.”

Coach Matt Schram says:  “Cole was a three-year varsity starter. He’s one of the few freshmen in our program who never played freshmen baseball but went right to jayvee his freshman year and then started for us as a sophomore. You have to be pretty special to be a sophomore starting.
“He was injured as a junior, and through his injury, he even became more mature. The injury he suffered was to the point where he couldn’t throw the baseball, so he had to be a designated hitter all year. For some kids, DH is perfect for them, but for him, it wore him down because he needed to be out on the field. He needed to make a diving catch, he needed to catch the ball at third base, he needed to be involved in that part of the game. On top of that, he’s one of the better players in the area, so he had to take on a leadership role by accepting a role that was due to an injury.
“From a baseball standpoint, he’s got incredible skills. He’s knowledgeable of the game, and he loves baseball so much. I actually have to keep him even keel during the offseason because he cannot wait for the season the start. It’s a lot of fun with him.
“Part of the reason he’s so much fun to be around is he’s got a bunch of energy. He’s happy go lucky, he’s very emotional in a good way, and he’s very passionate not only about the game but about the team and his teammates. He’s a kid I’m going to miss as a high school coach.”
