He has won two AJGA Opens and had two runner-up finishes and holds 14 AJGA Top 10 finishes. Zach Herr – Vanderbilt University (Golf)

Major:  Business/Finance

Final list of colleges:  Vanderbilt, LSU, Florida, UNC, Wake Forest

Reasons for choosing Vanderbilt:  “Once I visited all the universities and was able to compare my choices, it became obvious Vandy was the place. It is one of the top five educations outside of the Ivy League which can offer a scholarship. It is located in the south and participates in the SEC, which has one of the toughest golf schedules. When you factor in two of the best coaches in Mr. Limbaugh and Mr. Smith and the facilities which are under construction at the Legends Course, which the university owns, it was tough to beat.”

What was the progression that led you to playing golf at the collegiate level?  “It all started when I picked up a Fisher Price club when I was three years old, or so I am told. My father cut off a Titleist Driver when I was five and wrapped it in electrical tape for the grip. I played in my first tournament when I was seven and placed second at the US Kids World Championships at Pinehurst when I was 11. After that event, I visited Wake Forest and I was hooked. Once I won my first AJGA Open event when I was 14 and I was invited to all the invitationals, I got a lot of looks, and we started the visits immediately.”

Vanderbilt golf coach Scott Limbaugh says:  “We feel that Zach Herr is an outstanding player. He’s also a great young man with great leadership qualities. Zach is a very accomplished player that is very hungry to work hard and be part of this program.”

CR North coach Rich White says:  “His abilities go right to the bag. He doesn’t have any weaknesses. He has a very good short game, he’s a very good putter, and he’s very good off the tees long. There’s certainly a work ethic involved, there’s certainly an attitude that’s involved, and there’s some background with lessons that’s involved, but you have to be born with some tools. You have to have some natural ability, and I think Zach (and his sisters) all have their share of natural ability that is purely genetic.”
