CR South Trio to Compete in Collegiate Track & Field

On Tuesday, June 1, 2021, Council Rock South seniors Siniru Iheoma, Lucy Stewart & Remi Acord were recognized for committing to compete in track and field at the collegiate level.

Remi Acord – Susquehanna University (Track & Field)

Major: Biochemistry

Final list of colleges:  Susquehanna, Rider, Widener, Buffalo State, Duquesne

Reasons for choosing Susquehanna:  “I really liked their track program - they’re one of the most competitive D-3 schools. I like all the coaches – they’re real easy to get along with. I also liked the school environment when I went to visit. It was a really nice school.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track and field at the collegiate level?  “I’ve always wanted to do a sport in college. I used to play every single sport there was, and when I got to high school, I just stuck with track. That was the one thing I wanted to stick with my whole life. I like competing, I like the sport, and I love the people that you meet.”

Coach Ken Worthen says:  “Remi Accord is going to a really fine college. They’re consistently league champions, they’re a very supportive team, and Remi will be a long and triple jumper at Susquehanna. The state championships were held recently, and one of the problems with being an athlete is sometimes injuries pop up. That’s what happened to Remi midseason. Her best jump would have medalled at the state meet. That’s where she stands.”

Siniru Iheoma – Princeton University (Track & Field)

Major:  Psychology

Final list of colleges:  Princeton, UNC, Virginia, Brown, Iowa

Reasons for choosing Princeton:  “The coach definitely persuaded me – she made some really good points. I was on the fence between UVA and Princeton, but I wanted to get a better education, and I knew Princeton could do that for me and I also could have a good athletic career there too.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track and field at the collegiate level?  “I started in eighth grade because my dad thought I’d be good at it because I have a good upper body because I did gymnastics. I did that in eighth grade and then freshman year I did my throwing. My parents got me a personal trainer even though I didn’t really want one. I also quit gymnastics for it too, and ultimately, it was a good decision even though I was kind of mad about it. I think I really peaked sophomore year, and then junior year came and we had COVID so we had to stop and my progression went down a little bit, but this spring I definitely came back higher.”

Coach Ken Worthen says:  “Sinura Iheoma will be going to Princeton University. Their coach was doing backflips when she made the commitment to go. She is a two-time state champion and probably would have had a couple more state championships had it not been for COVID-19. She is one of the most focused people we have ever coached, and that’s what I takes to be a great athlete.”

Lucy Stewart – Penn State Abington (Track & Field)

Major: Early Childhood Education

Final list of colleges: Penn State Abington, TCNJ, Kutztown, Delaware Valley, West Chester

Reasons for choosing Penn State Abington:  “The campus, the location, the running and the coaches there too.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track at the collegiate level?  “Senior year when I met with the coach for the first time – I realized I wanted to do it.”

Coach Joan Thornton says:  “Lucy Stewart has been a year-round runner all four years – cross country, winter track and spring track. She’s always worked real hard, and one of the biggest things she has is her willingness to collaborate and work with not only me as a coach but also with her teammates. She was my captain for cross country – we had an undefeated season and were league champs. We didn’t have a spring season last year, but Lucy really helped rallying the troops. She kept everybody connected during that offseason of spring and into summer. Along with her co-captains, she even created a workout video to keep them connected, and she reached out virtually to everybody. That’s the kind of leader Lucy is, and I know she’s going to carry that into her college career and connect and keep the team rallying. I think she’s going to have a great career, and I’m really proud of her for continuing on. It’s the best thing for a coach to see their athletes want to continue.”

Favorite TV show: Gray’s Anatomy
