Kevin Barron – Campbell University (Baseball)

Major: Education

Final list of colleges:  Campbell, Bloomsburg, Gwynedd Mercy

Reasons for choosing Campbell:  “It’s just a great atmosphere. I went down over the summer after a tournament. The campus is small, which benefits me academically. The coaches are outgoing, they’re very honest and upfront with you. Two kids from my AAU team are going there as well, so the three of us will know each other. They’ve been very successful the past three years – they won 40-plus games every year over the last three years.”

What was the progression that led you to play baseball at the collegiate level?  “It’s happened since I first started playing. My cousin is a Division One football player, and seeing him go to play in college – my dream has always been to be a professional athlete, so I continued to push hard and had help from coaches and teammates. Knowing I always wanted to play professionally, college has to come first.”

Coach Pete Moore says:  “What makes him so good is his drive. He’s very goal oriented, and he knew this is what he wanted. He sacrificed a lot because he’s a very talented athlete, and he probably could have started varsity level in multiple sports at our high school, but baseball has always been his passion, his first love, and he decided to give those things up and focus on baseball. It paid off with the scholarship he got from Campbell.
“He’s versatile. He came in as a sophomore and played right field and first base, and then his junior year we moved him to third base. He could play shortstop as well – he could really play anywhere on the field. He stepped on the mound and pitched for us and did a very good job last year. He earned second team all-league. He’s got a lot of pop in his bat which will transfer over to the college level, and his arm strength and the carry he has on his throws is well above average for what you see in high school.”
