Ryan Fitzpatrick – Central Connecticut State University (Football)

Major:  Business with a concentration in Finance

Final list of colleges:  Central Connecticut, Ithaca, Clarion, Wagner

Reasons for choosing Central Connecticut:  “I visited a bunch of schools, and once I got to Central Connecticut it just fit. I really just felt with the academics and athletics, it was a good blend. I really like the way they’re running the program. They’ve had a couple of rough years, but they got a new coach, coach (Peter) Rossomando, and he brought in a lot of good transfer recruits, and he’s really turning the program around.”

What was the progression that led you to playing football at the collegiate level?  “Back in June, I tore my ACL in a 7-on-7. It was a typical hinge block – I was playing fullback. I planted my foot weird, and it gave out. The trainer came over to me, and I said, ‘No, no, I’m fine.’ I tried to go back in, but it didn’t seem right. They did a couple of routine tests, and she told me right away she thought I tore my ACL. I was really upset by that.
“I got my surgery in September and didn’t play at all this season. At the end of the season, I didn’t think I had any options. Some D-3 schools wrote me off right away. I was looking at the Patriot League primarily, and they all wrote me off. I thought this was the perfect opportunity. Playing at Central Connecticut, I’ll play lots of Patriot League teams and be able to show that I was worth it.”

Coach Michael Kapusta says:  “As a football player, he’s got really good speed and explosiveness. He’s one of those kids – he’s very strong, very fast and controls his body well, and he plays aggressively.
“He’s a hard worker, he’s a good weight room guy, and through the hardships he’s been through the past couple of years, he’s shown a good amount of dedication, staying with the team, staying with the guys even though his season was over.
“His junior year he actually was fighting hamstring injuries the whole time, so we never really saw his full potential. I’m really glad he got this chance. I think Central Connecticut might have found a diamond in the rough. He’s a good kid, gets good grades and he’s a hard worker and has untapped potential.”
