Cassidy Gavaghan – Monmouth University (Golf)

Major:  Biology

Final list of colleges:  Monmouth, Lehigh

Reasons for choosing Monmouth:  “It came down to Monmouth and Lehigh, and not only the money, but I thought it was more suited for me. I do pretty well in school, but I think the academic rigors at Lehigh would be a lot more strenuous. I know I’m going to have to go to grad school because my major is in the medical field, so I thought it was wise to save my dollars for my post-undergrad years.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in golf at the collegiate level?  “When I entered high school, I started to take golf more seriously and started to play more tournaments. I realized I wanted to play at the next level because I thought I had the ability, and I thought I had the distance - distance is a large part of golf.”

Coach Glenn Kaiser:  “Cassidy is the most decorated girl golfer at Hatboro-Horsham since Dayna Burleigh, who went on to be the rookie of the year and played golf for Michigan State. She’s a teaching pro now. Cassidy didn’t win any state medals, but in terms of four years of golf - her first year she was first team All-SOL when we really didn’t have a team competition. She became a captain as a sophomore and was a three-year captain. She was a three-time district qualifier, and she led our team in scoring average for four straight years and had a lot of choices for college. She really narrowed it down to Lehigh and Monmouth, and I think Monmouth was a better deal for her in terms of scholarship and the team itself. They’re an up and coming program. I think in terms of her golf, there’s still an upside. Her AGJ events – she’s just been so committed. I’ve never had a more committed athlete, wrestling included, at the high school level. Her dedication and work ethic is just unbelievable. She’ll be out practicing on her own, whether it be chip and putting, in a bunker, at the range, playing a few holes. She is just non-stop all year long. She’s sacrificed a lot. She’s a good athlete. She is special.
“She has tournament experience and certainly match play experience and head-to-head when it comes to team events. It’s all about tournaments, and she knows that. She’s well prepared. She’s phenomenal. Her power and distance is just unbelievable, and she can hit about every shot in the book. She’s never really in trouble, and when she’s in trouble, she recovers rather well. Her weakest part is putting, and her short game in the postseason around the greens was absolutely phenomenal. She picked herself up around the greens with chipping.”
