Kelsey Koelzer – Princeton University (Ice Hockey)

Major: Biomedical Engineering

Final list of colleges: Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth, RPI, Union, Ohio State

Reasons for choosing Princeton:  “I just think it was the best fit for me academically and athletically and also personally. I like that it’s close to a city but not too hectic. It’s close to home but far enough away that I’ll be able to have the full experience. I loved the coaching staff and everything Princeton offered. It offered great programs academically.”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate ice hockey?  “I probably started thinking about it two or three years ago. I originally started playing boys’ hockey and then I moved over the girls’ hockey when I was 12 or 13. It was about two years ago when I started touring colleges and getting serious about it.”

NJ Rockets U19 coach Mark Hurle:  “Two years ago, Kelsey was part of the one of the best lines Jersey ever had. She played on the line with Miye D’Oench, who is playing at Harvard, and Lauren Wash, who is playing at RPI. What makes Kelsey pretty special is she has the unique combination of size and great hockey sense – she could read things really good and has a great understanding of where other people will be. I used to put her on our power play point because she reads it so well.  Kelsey also has a tremendous shot – it’s a cannon. To go with that size, she has great speed, great strength. It’s really rare that you get all that together.
“Believe it or not, as quiet as she is, she’s very fiery. She hates to lose. I always think all the best athletes hate to lose. She always set a good example on the ice. If we were down, she would pick it up and get more physical. She did whatever it took to win. The two linemen she played with are both playing DI as freshman and getting tons of ice, and she’s going to be the same at Princeton.”
