Greg McDonough – Widener University (Baseball)

Major: Finance

Final list of colleges: Widener, Penn State

Reasons for choosing Widener:  “Widener is a small school, and it gave me a better feeling that I would have close relationships with my professors instead of being in a really, really big school with 40,000 people. They also have a pretty good business program, and I got into the honors program as well.”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate softball?  “I went to a lot of showcases, and I knew I wanted to play baseball in college. I just didn’t know where. I went to a bunch of showcases, and the whole recruiting process started. Widener contacted me, and that’s when I made my decision.”

Coach Shannon Gunby says:  “Greg is one of those multi-sport athletes in our district that plays football and baseball, and I had a chance to coach him in both. He’s a kid that gives 100 percent on and off the field. He has great character and had a very successful career with the ton of hard work he put into it. He has great athletic ability.
“He hit .400 in back-to-back seasons as a junior and senior, and he was our team leader in on-base percentage both years. He hit leadoff for us and took a ton of pitches. As a hitter, he can go deep in the count. He could go 0-for-2 or 1-for-2 and get good results. He’s blessed with great speed, and he’s strong defensively in the outfield.
“All three of these guys (McDonough, Randy Frankenfield and Bill McFarland) are just high academic kids. They were leaders in every facet, showing our younger guys the way to go about high school in general with academics, their character and also athletics.
