Billy McFarland – Stevens Institute of Technology (Baseball)

Major: Quantitative Finance

Final list of colleges:  Stevens, Arcadia, Johns Hopkins

Reasons for choosing Stevens:  “Just the great balance of athletics and academics. Stevens had the program that I wanted to go into, so I thought, ‘You know what – I might as well do the thing I want to be doing for the rest of my life.’”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate baseball?  “Ever since I was a little kid – I’ve always wanted to play baseball in college. It’s been a dream of mine that turned into a goal, and I finally achieved it.”

Coach Shannon Gunby says: “Billy is a kid that started for us since his freshman year. As a freshman, he was a very integral part of our Suburban One American Conference championship season on a team that ended up in the district quarterfinals. He started for us the last four years, and he’s a very hard worker. Here’s a kid if a ball is hit to him, he’s got it taken care of. He’s definitely one of those players who is a true leader in the sense of his actions. He very much took the younger guys under his wing this year and showed them how to work hard and showed them how to be productive. Billy made the transition to first base this year. He played third base the last three seasons. We moved him over to first base, and without any hesitation, he went over there and played really well for us.
“All three of these guys (McFarland, Greg McDonough and Randy Frankenfield) are just high academic kids. They were leaders in every facet, showing our younger guys the way to go about high school in general with academics, their character and also athletics.”
