Starrett Vesper – East Carolina University (Track & Field)

Major:  Exercise Physiology

Final list of colleges:  East Carolina, Coastal Carolina, West Chester, East Stroudsburg

Reasons for choosing East Carolina:  “When I went to East Carolina, everyone from the coaching staff to the athletes on the team made me feel really welcomed, and it just felt like the right atmosphere, somewhere I’d like to spend the next four years.”

Coach Jay Jones says:  “Starrett Vesper is heading to East Carolina, and first off, he’s an outstanding young man. He’s first class, he’s a true gentleman. Mom, dad and family should be very, very proud of the young man you have raised. He’s going to East Carolina to pole vault. One of the only numbers I will give is 12.6, that’s it. Between cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, hammer throw, steeple chase, all of the events in track and field, Division I scholarships – you get 12.6 in the men’s program. You have to chop it up, you have to figure out not just athletes in America but also internationally as well as swimming and some other sports as well. So this is truly remarkable considering Starrett picked up the event as a freshman. In a short period of time, he’s figured out how to run down a runway, stick a piece of fiberglass in the ground and fly up over 14 feet, obviously with the help of Mr. Swanker. I wish I could take credit for that, but I absolutely cannot. He’s a hard worker. Everything he gets is well deserved, and we couldn’t be prouder of him.”
