Mackenzie Obert – Hartford University (Softball)

Major:  Physical Therapy

Final list of colleges:  Hartford, Quinnipiac, Georgetown

Reasons for choosing Hartford:  “I went to a camp in Connecticut. It wasn’t necessarily for Hartford – there were multiple college coaches at the camp. I started working one-on-one with Coach D (Hartford coach Diana Consolmagno), and we hit it off right away. She invited me to her camp that was specifically for Hartford. Once I got to meet the girls and all the other assistant coaches, I absolutely fell in love with it. I knew that’s where I could see myself the next four years of my life.”

When did you start thinking about playing collegiate softball?  “My sister went to Holy Family University and played softball. I saw her go through her recruiting and making her player videos, and I thought, ‘Wow, this is pretty cool.’ She went to college for free, and I knew that could help me in the long run. It certainly has so far.”

Coach Frank McSherry says: “Mackenzie is a four-year starter. We don’t start too many freshmen, but Mackenzie was special from the start. She’s a great defensive player and a great offensive player, and she’s just a really, really good teammate, which we try and stress. Mackenzie works really, really hard. She is a great offensive player because she always makes contact, and that’s a big thing. She will very seldom strike out. She has some power hitting into the allies. She’s not going to hit a bunch of home runs, but she hits the gappers, and again, she puts the ball in play for us. She’s been great. Mackenzie and Jess Greenewald - at shortstop and second base – compete against one another in a friendly way and a fun way to watch at practice every single day. They throw with each other every day, and even in practice, they test one another. I’ve known Mackenzie since she was five or six years old, and she’s always been around a softball field.”
