Monica Brill – University of Tampa (Track & Field)

Coach Bill Smith says:  “Monica is a distance runner, and she ran cross country, winter and spring track. She has improved dramatically - she advanced to the state meet in the mile. She’s a quiet leader, and she leads by example. She’s not someone who’s going to be in the front of the room and rah rah. She’s going to do it just with hard work and determination. She was a basketball player, and in her junior year, she made the decision that she wanted to go exclusively for track because she wanted to be really good at something. She felt that going cross country, winter and spring track was the way she was going to be able to do that.
“Monica is selfless – it’s not about her. I would say ‘What would you like to run?’ She would say, ‘You choose. Tell me what you want me to do, and I’ll do it.’ That was always her mindset. Whatever it was for the best of the team, she would do that. She’s hardworking, very determined, and she was a real pleasure to coach. With all the troubles we have today with it being about themselves, the ‘me generation,’ she’s the complete opposite. She’s a throwback to what’s best for everybody else.”
