Pennridge's Cutbert to Play Water Polo at La Salle

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, Pennridge senior Katelyn Cuthbert was recognized for committing to continue her water polo career at La Salle University.

Katelyn Cuthbert – La Salle University (Water Polo)

Major: Nursing

Final list of colleges:  La Salle, Mercyhurst, Wheaton, Penn State

Reasons for choosing La Salle:  “It's in the city, not too far from home. They have a good polo team, and most importantly, it has a great nursing program that knows how to accommodate sports.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in water polo at the collegiate level? “Freshman year was kind of rough for me water polo-wise. I was brand new to the team, and the girls already knew how to play, and I was one of the very first players to ever start playing freshman year. During my summer going into sophomore year, we had a tournament called National State Challenge, and the varsity goalie didn’t show up because she was really sick, so I had to play every single game and every single minute. During that tournament, I really came into my own. We won – we went undefeated, and I was named top seven player of the tournament out of all ages and genders. That was one of my big moments, and that was a really big turning point for me.”

Coach Jacob Grant says: “Katelyn was our starting varsity goalie for the last three years, and in her freshman year, she did get some varsity time as well in a couple of different games in tournaments. Kate has grown exponentially not only as an athlete but as an individual in and out of the water. She has taken every opportunity to play water polo and get better and further herself athletically. She was a part of USA Water Polo, American Water Polo. She played on multiple club teams in different divisions to get exposure. She has gone to Junior Olympics, she has gone to regionals and nationals with the USA Water Polo program and the Olympic Development Program (ODP) to meet college coaches and to get better experiences playing against girls from all over the country. This year she made the National Tournament Team to represent the Northeast Zone, so she was one of two goalies picked to represent the entire northeast in California at a tournament. I know she’s going to do great things as a goalie for La Salle, going in there and getting some good playing time very early.”
