Final list of colleges: Pitt, Bloomsburg, North Carolina State, University of Pennsylvania
Reasons for choosing Pitt: “They were number six in the country this year. Obviously, they were the top team that scouted me. I liked the campus, I liked the team, I liked the coaching staff. I thought it would be best for academics and athletics for my career in college.”
What was the progression that led you to wrestle at the collegiate level? “I always knew I was going to wrestle in college. I’d wrestled my whole life, so I might as well get into a better college because of wrestling.”
Coach Dan Goetter says: “Ben always had such a great work ethic, and he loved the underdog mentality. He always thought he could beat the kid, no matter who it was. It didn’t really faze him if he was wrestling a state medalist or some kid he knew he was going to beat – he always wrestled the same way. It really helps to have a kid like him to show other kids they shouldn’t be intimidated by anyone and that you can go out there and beat anyone.
“He went into the postseason, especially his junior year – we didn’t expect him to even make states, and he went ahead and won regionals. The biggest part was that he didn’t care people thought he was going to lose. He just wanted to go out and prove how good he was. He always wrestled with a chip on his shoulder.
“Pitt is a great school, a great education and great wrestling. I think he has a great future there.”
