Alexia Kirk – Bloomsburg University (Track & Field)

Major:  Education

Reasons for choosing Bloomsburg:  “I felt at home.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track and field at the collegiate level?  “My coaches pushing me and my family encouraging me.”

Coach Bill Smith says:  “Lexi was out for track for four years – winter and spring, and she ran cross country this past year in preparation for the winter and spring seasons. The area she was really focusing on was the 300 hurdles, so consequently, in the winter time, we were focusing more on the speed stuff and the strength of a 400 to get her prepared. She was able to run in our 4x400 at the indoor state meet and improved dramatically and was much more consistent having that base work that she did. She was one of the captains for the winter track team and would have been a captain this spring as well. Her real big goal was the 300 hurdles, and that was her total focus. We had expected really, really big things from her. She had improved leadership-wise and was very intense and a hard worker.”

Melissa Sicinski – Bloomsburg University (Track & Field)

Major:  Middle Level Education

Reasons for choosing Bloomsburg:  “They had an outstanding education department. The coaching staff at BU is wonderful, and I fell in love with the campus when I visited.”

Coach Bill Smith says:  “Melissa participated in winter and spring track all four years. She has been a 200-400 type runner for us. She was on the 4x200 relay that came in second in the state this past winter and was the anchor leg. She held off an approaching runner right behind her. The difference between coming in second and fifth was hundredths of a second, and she fought to the bitter end, out-leaned the girl at the end. That girl ended up not coming in third but ended up coming in fourth in the state meet – that’s how close it was. Her determination to finish that race - she really, really ran a tremendous race. She’s a very, very hard worker. The 400 was what she really wanted to focus on, and she also was on our 4x400 that went to the indoor state meet and throughout the years has been on our 4x2s, 4x1s and 4x4s. Definitely, the last race of her high school career was the best race that she ever ran in the 4x2, if there’s a way to finish off your high school career. Both Melissa and Lexi were very, very disappointed as well as I was very disappointed because we really had a great team coming into this spring. We had three teams – the 4x8, the distance medley and the 4x2 that won all-state certificates and medalled.”
