Blake Stewart – Jefferson University (Golf)

Major:  Accounting and Healthcare Finance

Reasons for choosing Jefferson:  “When I visited Thomas Jefferson University, I just felt that this school was the one. From the great academics to the coaches to the beautiful campus that is so close to the city. With the idea that I can maximize my potential from all aspects, it was a no brainer.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in golf at the collegiate level?  “I come from a family who loves the game of golf, from my Grandfather, Father, down to my brothers. It was not until the ninth grade that I started to take my golf game seriously. With anything, I try to be the best, and golf was no different. I worked very hard to maximize my ability as a golfer and continue to do so. I just keep working as much as I can to try and be the one to beat. When I found out that I could play a sport I love for another four years competitively while getting a great education, there was no better scenario.”

Coach Steve Yurchak says:  “Blake is a grinder. I realize that might be a statement that’s a little vague, but this kid had tenacity and he always had the will to win. When things were down, he kicked it into high gear, and he always took it to another level. When we had a big match, I could count on him. Usually when you talk to kids and say, ‘Hey, we really need you today,’ they kind of shy away, they get scared, but Blake stepped it up. When I needed low scores from him, you could count on him. He was a good practice player, he was always at the range. He went above and beyond. He was the first kid on the tee and the last kid to leave.

“I had Blake as a ninth grader, and he was a four-year varsity player. You could see when he was playing in ninth grade - he didn’t back away from kids, and when he became a senior, he had no fear. He was a good putter, he could strike the ball, and he really worked at the game, and he was a grinder.”
