Ciara DeVenuto-Wyeth – Jacksonville University (Crew)

Major:  Education & Athletic Training

Final list of colleges:  Jacksonville, University of Miami

Reasons for choosing Jacksonville:  “When I went on my official to Jacksonville, I loved that it had a small class size and a small student-teacher ratio. When I met the team, I wasn’t expecting to bond as well as I did, but we hung out, we had a great time together, and we really bonded as a team. Then I realized – that’s where I want to go.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in crew at the collegiate level?  “I tried various other sports – I tried swimming, I have done softball and I also danced, but none of them were really working. I wanted something unique and something that I could get a scholarship for that was for girls. I started rowing in ninth grade, so this will be my fourth year rowing. I started taking it seriously about two-and-a-half years into it. I was like, ‘This is what I want to do, and I would really love to do it in college.’”

Coach Matt Carlsen says:  “What makes a good rower is work ethic, number one. Practices are super grueling compared to most other sports, and if you don’t have a good work ethic and actually enjoy coming down to row, you will not succeed.
“Ciara is strong, she’s fit, and when she comes to practice, whatever the workout is – she puts her head down and does the workout without asking or saying, ‘This is hard. I can’t do it.’ She has an awesome work ethic.”
