Avery Stimmel – Loyola University (Swimming)

Major:  Undecided

Final list of colleges:  Loyola, Rider

Reasons for choosing Loyola: “I just really liked the campus when I went there. It was mostly the people because we had calls with the team, and I got along with them. Some of the other girls that were committing in my class, I talked to them too, and I just got along with everyone.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in swimming at the collegiate level?  “I always swam since I was five, but I never really thought I was going to swim in college or anything, but last year, it started becoming more like – ‘I don’t want it to end. I want to keep swimming,’ so that’s when I started thinking about it and I started looking into it. My best friend went to college for swimming, so that gave me a push to do it.”

Coach Tracey Hemmerle says:  “Avery and I had a lot of time together this year because she is one of my students in science. As a swimmer, she is competitive and very athletic. She can pretty much do any event, and she loves to race. She works hard at practice, and she was one of our captains this season. It was a different season, for sure, and trying to find ways to bond outside of the pool deck was hard. She did a good job trying to come up with ideas and different things to do. The team is a close-knit family, and I think we accomplished that same kind of atmosphere that we typically have this year.”

Coach Nick Luca says:  “Avery had a contagious attitude. She wanted to always participate as much as she could during practice, which made it really easy to have a successful training environment, something that is really important in the sport of swimming. You can give the best set in the world, and if nobody is on board with what the main focus is, no progress is going to be made. Avery made it really easy for everybody to be on board to go after that common goal.

“Avery’s main events this season were sprints freestyle – the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle. She also swam the 100 breaststroke in our medley relay. She’s really versatile. Anything she swam, she was competitive in, and without a doubt, any college coach could put her or train her for any event, and she would go after it and place well.”
