Mary Webb – University of Pennsylvania (Cross Country)

Major:  Undecided

Final list of colleges:  Penn, Yale, Columbia

Reasons for choosing Penn:  “I went on my visit – it was my last visit, and I just felt really at home. They have a new women’s head coach, and I really like her. I think the program is heading in a good direction, and the girls just really made me feel at home.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in cross country at the collegiate level?  “Last year was actually my first year running cross country – I was a soccer player before that, and for two years, I was on the girls’ soccer team. We had a really good team, and I had a really good season. It was my first season, so I didn’t really know what to expect. We made nationals, and it was such an awesome experience. Cross country is such a team sport, and I really loved that. I had run track before but never got the cross country aspect. I love to run, and I definitely wanted to consider it for the next four years.”

Coach Ken Cislak says:  “Mary played soccer the first two years of high school and used to play club ball. She came to us last year saying she wanted to run, and she got really serious last summer. We knew she always had the running talent, but with soccer and that being in the fall, she couldn’t really do both well. When she told us she was not playing soccer, we were thrilled. She’s got a great work ethic. You wouldn’t know that she didn’t run the first two years just because she fell into the mold and went along with everything. She’s very easygoing and did it all. That helped her a lot, and with the talent we had on the team last year and with our level of competition, it gave her recognition, and she was able to continue that this year the best she could.”
