PW's Carney & Baldwin Commit to Play Collegiate Softball

On Thursday, March 28, 2019, Plymouth Whitemarsh seniors Emma Carney and Peyton Baldwin were recognized for committing to continue their softball careers at the collegiate level. Check back for a gallery of photos.

“Peyton and Emma are part of a group of many seniors that will be graduating this year and have made what I have to do much easier,” coach Dana Moyer said. “They have great softball IQ, they always work hard, and they play for each other. They play hard for themselves, for the school and for each other. They’ve been an absolute pleasure to coach. They’re incredible young ladies in their own right and great student-athletes.”

Peyton Baldwin – Chestnut Hill College (Softball)
Major:  Exercise Science or Forensic Biology
Final list of colleges:  Chestnut Hill, St. Joseph’s, Delaware Valley, Thomas Jefferson
Reasons for choosing Chestnut Hill:  “I went to one of their sit-in practices, and I was watching the team practice. I really liked how the coach coached everyone and the team chemistry – they were all very excited. I love the area – it’s so pretty. It was the whole package for me.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level?  “I started playing softball when I was five, and I kept going. I was becoming more competitive, and it became an everyday thing for me. My life revolved around softball. I knew it was my dream to play in college since I was little.”
Coach Dana Moyer says:  “Peyton has started shortstop for us since freshman year. She has suffered through some injuries, and she was out her sophomore year with an ACL injury. She has great range as a shortstop, and she has great glove-work. Especially on plays up the middle, some might say ‘Oh, that’s a base hit,’ but she somehow gets there and makes a great turn and fires the ball over to first. She has a great softball IQ and understanding where the ball needs to go, and she’s a team player, which is very important.”

Favorite TV show:  The 100

Emma Carney – Gwynedd Mercy University (Softball)
Major:
Nursing
Final list of colleges:  Gwynedd Mercy, Eastern University
Reasons for choosing Gwynedd Mercy:  “I wanted a smaller type school, and when I went for a meeting with the softball team and they took me on a tour, I definitely knew it was a good environment for me. And it’s not far away from here, so it was a good distance as well.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level?  “I didn’t want softball to just end after playing for so long, so I definitely wanted to play after high school. They offered me a spot, so I took it.”
Coach Dana Moyer says:  “Emma is one of the funniest people I have ever met in my life. She’s an old woman in an 18-year-old’s body. The things that come out of her mouth are just witty. She just has a great perspective on life. As an athlete, she played jayvee her freshman year and really burst onto the scene her sophomore year. She played outfield for us, and she just gets the job done. There’s no frills or flare, but she gets the job done, and she has surprising power. She’s not that big, and she’ll hit the ball sometimes, and I’ll say, ‘Where did that come from?’ She’s just solid defensively. Every time she’s at-bat, I know it’s going to be a good at-bat pitch to pitch, which doesn’t always happen with high school athletes.”
