Zach Borzio – Williams College (Wrestling)

Major: Undeclared but seeking a double major of economics and statistics.

Reasons for choosing Williams College: “It offers one of the best educations in the world, and it’s a perfect fit for me with an amazing wrestling team and coach.

What was the progression that led you to competing in wrestling at the collegiate level?  “I have been wrestling since kindergarten, and I started seriously thinking about competing in college during middle school.”

Coach Kurt Handel says: “Zach Borzio started with us a little 106-pounder who grew up into a 152-pounder over his four years here. Zach is the epitome of a student-athlete. During his four years of high school, he has earned nothing lower than an A, all his grades have been A’s with one ‘pass’ during COVID. He is 26th in his class of 435 with a GPA of 4.22, and he’s taken some serious courses – five AP courses, 8-plus honors courses, so Zach is incredible in the classroom and just as incredible on the wrestling mat as well. In his freshman year with us, the only spot on the team was the 106-pound weight class, and Zach – at the time – had a pretty big stature like he does now, and he had to lose a few pounds to get to 106 to make the lineup. He’s a committed young man and a true teammate, and he said, ‘I’ll get the weight off.’ With the help of his mom and dad and his teammates, he committed himself to a very strict diet and workout regimen and got himself down there and got 35 wins that year.
“Zach has 128 career wins and 46 losses. He’s one of our top 15 wrestlers in his career. He has 77 pins, which is knocking on the top five. He’s a two-time district champ, a one-time state qualifier, and he was our team captain and a true student-athlete. I asked the guys on the team to give me some words to describe Zach as a teammate. One was ‘Mr. Reliable.’ Whenever they need something, he’s the guy they go to. The other one I thought was right on and the coaches can attest to that – when we go to away matches, we’re on buses or vans, and these athletes have some pretty interesting conversations. Zach is always the one to chime in, and he’s the voice of reason. I wish him the best of luck at Williams College. Thank you for four great years.”
