Collyn Dorney – East Stroudsburg University (Wrestling)

Major: Psychology

Final list of colleges: East Stroudsburg, Shippensburg, Bloomsburg

Reasons for choosing East Stroudsburg: “I didn’t really want to go to a D-1 school. I wanted to go smaller, D-2. I know one of the guys that goes there, and when I talked to the coach, it seemed like an interesting school that was for me. He said, ‘You have to work hard,’ and I think I’ll be able to work hard.”

What was the progression that led you to wrestling at the collegiate level? “My sophomore year I realized I wanted to wrestle in college. I’ve been doing it my whole life, and I don’t know what else I’d be able to do if I wasn’t wrestling. I just think my life would be boring if I didn’t have it.”

Coach Kurt Handel says: “Collyn is an example of community. He started at the youth level and went through the middle school program, went through the travel team program and went through the high school program, culminating with him finishing seventh on the all-time win list. He’s 125-39, seventh in the history of Quakertown wrestling, which goes back to 1961. It’s pretty impressive. He’s a section champion, a district champion and a state qualifier, but most importantly, he was a leader in the room. He was a true captain for two years. He was the guy that got the kids motivated, got them moving, got things started for the coaching staff, made sure the kids were doing the right thing outside of the room, which was excellent. To top it off, he’s a top-notch academic student. He’s an honor roll student, and he’s an example of a community guy that did all the programs and had a great career through all the Quakertown programs. It’s sad to see Collyn go.”
