Ryan Leatherman – Cairn University (Soccer)

Major:  Computer Science

Final list of colleges:  Cairn, Marywood, Lancaster Bible College, Penn Tech

Reasons for choosing Cairn:  “I chose Cairn because it was closer than the rest of my schools. I also chose it because it’s a Christian college, and I am very much based on my faith. I also liked the team.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in soccer at the collegiate level?  “Ever since freshman year, I’ve always thought I’d play soccer in college. Last year when I was playing, coaches were coming out to see me, so I decided that – yes, I would play soccer in college.”

Coach Kevin Woulfe says:  “Ryan came on his freshman year as part of a huge freshman class, and that year we also had a very, very large senior class. They were coming in and working hard for varsity spots as freshmen, and it was a challenge. Ryan came in and made the varsity squad as an outside back coming off the bench. Probably a quarter of the way through the season, he’s starting as an outside back. I don’t think he left the field since then.
“By his sophomore year, he was the starting center back. He was all-league sophomore year and every year after that. Ryan is a quiet guy on and off the field, but his play on the field is fun to watch. He’s all energy, he’s all go. He doesn’t stop, no matter what the score. My only wish was that we could have done better his senior year – get a little further up in the standings and get them some victories because they really did deserve it. They were a great group of boys, and Ryan led them as a captain sophomore through senior years. I was happy to hear he was going to college. Cairn is in for a surprise when he shows up because he’s probably not going to leave the field there for four years. He’s a dynamic player, and I look forward to going down and watching him play. He was a pleasure to coach, and we really enjoyed having him around for four years.”
