Victoria Sturgess – McGill University (Soccer)
Major: Bioengineering
Final list of colleges: McGill, Drexel, NJIT
Reasons for choosing McGill: “It has a really strong bioengineering program, which is what I want to major in, and I really like the city of Montreal. It has a European feel.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in soccer at the collegiate level? “I started thinking about it sophomore year that I wanted to do it in college. The summer before my junior year I visited the city, and that’s when I started looking at McGill.”
Coach Mike Koch says: “We had an outstanding season this season, but I’ve the honor and great, great privilege having been able to coach Vic several years before high school and also during her high school career. She’s an accomplished athlete – first team all-league. She’s an accomplished scholar – she was the Lehigh Valley Scholar-Athlete Award winner of the year, which is the female athlete from over 100 schools. She is going to play soccer at a high level at McGill University in Canada, and that’s one of the finest schools in the world. They’re all remarkable accomplishments, but more so, it’s the person she is and the leader she was to our team. She was self-sacrificing – she was willing to give up for the team for us to be successful. I believe that her example and her fellow seniors’ example led us to a great season. When I look back on all the great athletes I’ve coached, I will always remember Vic, the person, athlete, scholar and role model that she is.”
Coach Mellinda Joseph says: “It's absolutely been a pleasure knowing Vic. I said this to Vic before – some days I wish was more like her. Just her work ethic, her maturity and her leadership – everything about her makes her a remarkable young woman. She is going to do amazing things, and I can’t wait to hear about them in the future.”
