Tyler Wilkin – Bloomsburg University (Golf)

Major: Accounting

Final list of colleges: Bloomsburg, York College of PA, St. Joe’s

Reasons for choosing Bloomsburg: “I selected Bloomsburg not only to play golf, but for their business program. Their business program is well-known, and they have a massive alumni association to help me get internships and other opportunities in the future. It is also only an hour and 30 minutes away from home, so I can come home on weekends if I please.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in golf at the collegiate level? “As a kid, I thought that I would play basketball at the collegiate level, but when I started to play golf competitively, I fell in love. At that point, during my freshman year, I thought that I could practice a lot and get better, and I did just that. I continued to practice and improve and had the desire to play during the start of my junior year. My recruiting process started kind of late with an email to coach (Gary) Sohosky. I then sent him some film and scores, and he was interested! Then I fully committed to Bloomsburg and am continuing to practice to be able to play in the matches in September.”

Coach Steve Oltman says: “I’ve been the head coach for three years, so I got Ty when he was a sophomore. Ty was an absolute pleasure to work with and a leader on the team. We talked about that a lot the last couple of seasons, but he really stepped up and modeled appropriate behavior. He did what he was supposed to do. He refrained from throwing clubs and getting angry when he didn’t play very well, which happens sometimes. He also worked really, really hard all the way through, paid attention and led the younger kids throughout some pretty good seasons the last few years. We’re going to miss him, there’s no doubt about that. Ty attained all-conference honors all three years that I had him – he got honorable mention or second team, and that’s hard to do when there are 167 golfers in our division, and Ty was one of the top 15, so that’s fantastic. Good luck at Bloomsburg.”

Assistant coach Kurt Amen says: “Last year was my first year of coaching golf at this school, and I’ve got to tell you – Ty exudes leadership better than any captain I’ve ever seen. On the golf team, we always say we don’t have captains, but he was definitely one of the best leaders I’ve ever been around. Watching him involved with everything within the school – Ty, you’re a role model for everybody at this school, and it’s impressive. I’m just honored to have been part of his life.”
