Angelina Refice – La Salle University (Softball)

Major: Biology/Pre-Med

Final list of colleges:  La Salle, Wagner, Monmouth, Penn State

Reasons for choosing La Salle:  “Coach Ron (Shoemaker) at La Salle was the first school that really focused on academics, and he knew my major the first time I went in. I went for two visits. The second was an unofficial overnight, and I met the whole team. I watched their practice, and I just had a moment where I sat there and thought, ‘I could see myself here for the next four years. I could see myself with these girls every day practicing and playing,’ and it just seemed like a great fit academically and athletically.”

What was the progression that led you to play softball at the collegiate level?  “The summer going into my ninth grade year my hitting coach told me he thought I had the potential to play in college, so we started looking at teams that could get me seen at showcases and recruiting tournaments. Once I landed on a team, it kind of took off from there.
“I haven’t played high school the past two years, but I think the highlight of this year is just being welcomed back with open arms. The coaching staff has been very receptive and the girls have been very receptive. It just seems like a great opportunity to come in and help the program and see what we can do this year.”

Coach Jim Taylor says: “To have one of the best players come out of nowhere is great. She’s a newcomer you can plug right in, and you don’t have to worry about it. She brings her athleticism, which is something we are probably lacking and, although it’s not high school experience, her experience is at high levels of travel. Coming back to high school ball won’t be a breeze for her, but we know she’s going to be up to the challenge. Just to be able to plug somebody in who’s a little more experienced – I can’t wait for the opportunity.
“She’s an outfielder, and she’s going to be our centerfielder. She adds speed to the top of our order, which we have already in Amanda Wolfgang coming back as a senior. Those two in the outfield will track a lot down. Outfield was a weakness for us last year, and she strengthens us offensively and defensively with her speed. She’s a lefty, so she’s going to be a tough out. We’re going to have a lot of seniors, but overall, we’re still young. Maybe on other teams she wouldn’t be considered a power hitter, but for us, she’s going to hit for power. She’ll be a three for us, and she’ll steal some bases.”
