Caroline Schoenewald – Virginia Tech University

Major:  Engineering

Final list of colleges:  Virginia Tech, Virginia, University of North Carolina, Penn State, Maryland

Reasons for choosing Virginia Tech:  “It had an awesome campus, awesome coaches. I love the program. It’s going to be a fun time to play there. It’s a great education and a great engineering program - it’s awesome.”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate softball? “I started thinking about it probably my sophomore year. When I was younger, I never thought I would be able to play softball at a top D-1 program. That just didn’t even cross my mind. I always just played for fun, but some coaches came up to me and said I had potential. We started looking into it, and it all worked out.”

Coach Erin Scott says:  “One of the big parts of her game is her speed because she can do a lot at the plate. She can be a power hitter and can hit home runs, but she can also hit an infield ground ball in the gap and get on base. She can bunt or slap, and she’s just super athletic. She has the type of personality where if she makes a mistake, she doesn’t harp on it. She moves on almost immediately. Her mental game is really strong. Some players mentally put pressure on themselves, but she’s a lot more of a free spirit and just plays the game because she loves it.
“If her teammates are doing something wrong, she’ll speak up. She’s not going to be afraid to stand up for what’s right. She’s supportive of her teammates. You would never know that she’s going to Virginia Tech. She’s not one of those people that’s cocky. She’s really modest, and she works just as hard as everyone else. I think that has to do with her parents who brought them up in a certain way with certain expectations. It’s been such a pleasure to coach both Caroline and Julia because they know that I expect them to work hard, have a positive attitude and support their teammates, and they do that without me having to tell them.
“In the infield, her range at second base is unbelievable, and her athleticism with diving for ball – balls that you don’t expect somebody to get, she gets them.”
