Lauren Kenah – University of Virginia (Field Hockey)

Major: Biology

Final list of colleges:  Virginia, Michigan

Reasons for choosing UVA:  “I chose the University of Virginia because of its great academics and athletics, and it was a lot closer to home, and the campus is beautiful.”

Favorite high school sports memory: “My favorite memory was beating North Penn on their turf this year to contribute to our league title.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in field hockey at the collegiate level?  “I started playing hockey in first grade, but I definitely tried out several other sports. Probably around fifth grade, I decided to take it seriously and pursue it in college.”

Coach Sue Casciato says: “I saw Lauren play when she was in elementary school in the Upper Perk League. I was coaching the middle school or jayvee team, and we didn’t have enough players. Lauren came out of the stands and played. She was only in fourth or fifth grade. Obviously, Lauren is a gifted, natural athlete, but she also has an incredible work ethic. Even though probably half the things we do at practice are beneath her, she never acts like that. She works really hard every drill, and she’s always trying to improve her game. She deserves to be where she is because she’s definitely put in the time.
“Lauren is just very smooth, and I think it’s because she gets a lot of reps. She plays year-round, she loves the sport, and when you watch her play, it’s obvious she loves the sport. She was first team all-league, first team all-state, and she was named to Max Field Hockey’s top 10 in the state in the Class of 2022. She also won TheLeadershipPlaybook.com Athlete of the Year award and the Tracy Hottenstein and Erin Prediger Memorial Scholarships. She was always pretty quiet, and she waited for her turn to lead - she let the older kids lead until it was her turn senior year. Lauren not only wanted to have a successful season for herself - it was really important to her that the team did well. On paper, we were not as good a team as our record, but Lauren and some of our other seniors – we were as a team very single-minded. We went onto the field expecting to win.”
