Tara Maloney – Slippery Rock University (Field Hockey)

Major:  Health/Physical Education

Reasons for choosing Slippery Rock:  “The only school I ever wanted to attend was Slippery Rock. When I went on my official visit, I immediately fell in love. When I met the team, everything felt right. The program for physical education is also one of the best in the state.”

What was the progression that led you to playing field hockey at the collegiate level?  “Definitely the biggest thing for me was the coaches I’ve had throughout the years. Courtney Hughes and Lauren Whiteside had the biggest impact on me. They made me fall in love with the sport each and every time I went to practice with them and also with the girls on the team. I just wanted to keep playing.”

My inspiration to be a college athlete:  “Courtney Hughes was the first coach that I ever had, and she has helped me become the player and the person I am today. She is one of the biggest role models I have in my life, and I know she (always will be). Another one would be my high school coach, Lauren Whiteside. For the past three years, she has helped me through so much. From sickness to injuries, she never stopped believing in me. Both of my coaches are two of the most influential people in my life. They have pushed me more than anyone before, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have been able to work with them for so long.”

Favorite memory:  “All four years playing at the high school. Also, qualifying for NIT’s this year at Lock Haven.”

Coach Lauren Whiteside said:  “Tara’s positive attitude is really what set her apart. Coupled with her work ethic, it really made a difference. She was on the forward line, and she always tried her best, no matter what. Her teammates relied on her for everything from her attitude to being the spark that we needed.”
