Souderton senior Evan Slone was recognized for committing to play basketball at Arcadia University.

Evan Slone – Arcadia University (Basketball)

Major:  Business

Final list of colleges:  Arcadia, Lebanon Valley, Immaculata, Eastern, DeSales, Marywood

Reasons for choosing Arcadia:  “My parents and I toured the campuses and met some really great coaches and potential teammates.   The decision was prayed about for a while, as I was supported by all the college coaches during the season, went to their games and visited them for overnights.  I had to go with my gut and felt in the end Arcadia’s education, Coach Scott and crew and the team were the best fit for me.

What was the progression that led you to playing basketball at the collegiate level?  “I always loved basketball from a super young age.  Because I enjoyed the game and sense of extended family so much, as a high school sophomore, I started thinking about playing at the collegiate level.  The summer before my junior year during summer league and preseason tournaments, I was told by my coaches to give some thought to seeking to play in college because they felt some schools would be interested in my style of play.”

Coach Pete Chimera says:  “I think really the biggest part about Evan was his desire to be good. He worked so hard. I was with him for three years, and each summer he came back stronger and better than he was the year before. He just worked so hard in drills with us and on his own. Even to this day, we were just talking today in open gym – he goes to the park every day at 8:30 at night, and he works to get better. He’s a tremendous competitor, he never stops.
“I’ve told the college coaches – his best basketball is ahead of him. He was great for me for two years, but he is going to be fantastic at Arcadia, and they are really lucky to have him from a basketball perspective and a kid perspective. He’s developed into such a nice young man as well. I got three or four e-mails from coaches in our league – and this is very unusual - complimenting him and not on the basketball part because they certainly complimented that, but about things he said to them after the game was over. I remember the one (CB South coach) Jason (Campbell) told me about. He said to Jason, ‘Coach, I always loved playing against your guys because your guys play so hard, and it’s so much fun to play against your team. You do a great job with your program.’ For a 17-year-old kid who, when I got there two years ago when he was a sophomore, I’m not sure that he said three words – he was so quiet. He’s just a great kid. One of my favorite moments – although not a happy moment – was when I took him out of the Phoenixville game in our last game and hugged him coming off the court. It felt so good because I knew how much he had accomplished.”
